1000 Ultimate Experiences is an app produced by Lonely Planet, highlighting the top travel experiences recommended by their writers, packed full of interesting pictures and insights. It includes information on the top ideas, places and activities that they recommend. Based on a book of the same name, which was a best selling title, it’s interesting to see how it has moved onto the iPad.

Being a book, the content is the main feature, and this app certainly delivers. The images are fantastic, amongst some of the best travel photography available on the iPad. With the range of countries and experiences on offer, it’s just great to browse through them all. Each piece of content also has a small write up, providing enough information for you to consider if it’s worth  researching even more. Some of the experiences also have a video, which are again great to watch. However, the best feature by far is the ability to share the content via email. This attaches a beautiful image, containing both the picture and information about the experience to an email for you to send onto somebody else.

The app works well, and does a great job of showcasing the content. However, it can be quite difficult to find what you want, with no search facility available. Even so, it’s easy to navigate from one experience to another, and the categories they are sorted into means that it is painless. In a book, the content is usually set up for browsing, and this app recreates that experience perfectly. The user interface is fantastic, and it would be great to see more books turned into apps using a similar

While the price might seem expensive for App Store standards, it’s really a fantastic price. Considering the high quality content that is included and the fact that it is drastically cheaper than the book, it’s great value for money. You can be sure that if you purchase this, you’ll be happy, especially considering that reading through the app will provide hours of entertainment. With over 1000 pieces of information, even if you go through 10 parts every day, it will take 100 days to cover it all.

There isn’t many problems with the app, as it’s a great read. However, one small complaint would be that you can’t group by location. It would be brilliant to be able to select a country and then see all of the experiences recommended within it. Without this though, you have to go through each of the categories individually to see if there is anything. In addition, it would be good if you could bookmark the experiences for future reference.

In conclusion, the app sets out to inspire you to want to take part in experiences, and it certainly does that. With the beautiful images and the fantastic information, it will get you thinking about taking a trip as soon as possible. However, there are a few improvements that could be made which would make everything a lot easier. Considering the price, it’s definitely worth downloading.
