Billings

There is a big selection of different invoicing and billings apps available for the Mac, it’s becoming quite difficult to sort between all of them. However, one that sticks out from the crowd is Billings, the winner of a prestigious Apple Design Award.

Billings is packed full of useful features. It’s great to track time, especially with the widget in the menu bar which can be turned on and off to track time. At the same time, it’s the perfect way to link clients, projects and billing together. The reports are amazing, with the ability to pull up your top clients or unpaid invoices within seconds. However, the best thing by far are the invoices and documents, which look incredibly professional, and can help your business to look that much better, which can always help. It’s got everything you could ever need, all in one app.

When you’re working, you don’t want something else to take up all you’re time. You also don’t want it to be difficult, as it’s supposed to make your life easier. Thankfully, this app is both easy to use, and it’s also really quick to input all of the data. The menus are all clear, so you can get to what you want quickly, and when you get there, the data is also well presented.

One thing that keeps this app above the competition is the iPhone app, which can be used as a standalone solution, or is a fantastic way to sync data. However, while you can use the app standalone, to sync data you need to buy an unlock, which is quite expensive, especially once you consider that you’ve already brought the Mac version as well. Even so, it’s one of the best apps available to do the same job, and gets better when you consider not many of the apps offer sync. It would however be nice to see an iPad app.

At first look, Billings might seem expensive, especially compared to the low prices we are used to paying on the iPad and iPhone. However, if you look closer, you’ll realise that it is in fact fantastic value for money. Not simply because it has all of the features, but also because the price is similar to that of other apps, while this is much better. In terms of a business, it’s a relatively small investment for something you will be using everyday, and a small price to pay for the extra professional edge that it can provide you with.

Fortunately, the app is rather good and there isn’t many things that need to be improved. However, one problem that I did have was that the clients were all based around the address book. Even new entries that are created inside Billings are then added to the address book. It would be great to see an option to keep the contacts inside the app, as I’d rather not have them in my address book.

It’s fantastic that the developers are constantly updating the app, making it better. This means that the list of negatives will decrease over time, as they keep on improving and adding to it. If there is something you don’t like about the app now, it’s likely it will be there in the future, making it a brilliant investment.

Overall, this is probably one of the best apps to help you manage your time and invoice clients. The list of features and design is brilliant, and it’s great value for money. The only problem is the extra cost for the iPhone version and the lack of an iPad version, but based on the Mac app, it’s worth a purchase.
